Haven McClure, MSW, APSW
Haven brings us seven years of counseling experience. He earned his Master’s in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015 and is currently certified as an Advanced Practice Social Worker.
He is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and offers that among other tools in treating trauma. He has specialized in difficult life transitions, having been through many himself. He has considerable experience with members of the LGBTQIA+ community, including people who are transgender and gender non-conforming. He finds particular joy in helping people be true to themselves and who they are.
Prior to his career as a therapist, he spent fourteen years in fundraising and non-profit management for environmental groups and Catholic Charities. This included a five-year
stint as “Executive Director and Chief Dishwashing Officer” of a small non-profit where he was the sole employee.
He has also worn many other hats. He helped organize a cross country walk for the environment with a hundred people literally walking from Los Angeles to New York over nine months. He spent a few years as an event and club DJ. He spent a summer delivering auto windshields in a small truck. He also lived in housing cooperatives for sixteen years and has a keen eye for group dynamics. And he still moonlights from time to time as a taxicab driver. His various job has put him in touch with a wide variety of people, and prides himself in his ability to find things in common with almost anyone.
Haven has lived in Wisconsin since 2002 and can’t imagine living anywhere else. Prior to that he lived in Chicago and Los Angeles but found himself overwhelmed by big city life. He says he moved here to “get in touch with his inner cheesehead.” And yes, he roots for the Packers, Brewers and Bucks.
Judgment is the last thing you will feel from Haven when sitting down with him. He assumes that the clients who see him have been doing the best they could do under the circumstances. He resists pat answers and refuses to put his clients in categories or offer carbon-copy treatments. He views the therapist-client relationship as a partnership where he offers his training and life experiences, and the client offers their knowledge of their own lives. Out of that can come a productive partnership for growth and healing.
In addition to working with Holistic Counseling Services, Haven has his own private practice Counseling for the people in which he offers private pay and telehealth services only at this time. Haven’s practice is located in Madison, WI.
